This programme brochure will be your compass through a week of cinematic pleasures featuring more than extraordinary films from across the globe. While you hopefully enjoyed the summer, we spent our time sitting in the dark to select the best new productions from a record number of 3, submitted films. Many of the animated and documentary films in our five German and international Competition Sections are world or German premieres. They tell stories about freedom, love, independence, war, escape, beauty, work, dignity, climate change, forgiveness, painting, music, dying and remembrance.
These films excite, irritate and touch us, leave their mark — they open up new perspectives on the world and the times we live in. After years of suppression, the Egyptians and Tunisians have freed themselves from despots whom the West supported for years. I was deeply impressed by the bravery and courage of the people in North Africa. It evokes memories of the Peaceful Revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall. Discover the works of the best filmmakers of the time, which are amazingly topical even today, and recall the memorable year in our panel discussion with MDR Figaro on 19 October.
